2009-2013 Toyota 4Runner How to Fix Steering Wheel Controls

  • If your steering wheel controls are not working after connecting on your 2009-13 4Runner, first make sure you follow this link to connect this wire:

Next, make sure your Canbus box is connected (see our video). It is a small black box that plugs onto the wiring harness.

Last, if you have confirmed both of those, pull this pin out (keep orientation the same) and move the black wire over one slot. From first red arrow to second red arrow.

  • Hi Dave,

Thanks for posting these instructions. I'm trying to get my steering wheel controls to work on my 4Runner, but I'm running into a few issues with your solution.

My car has a JBL amplifier, and I have the Canbus box connected. When I checked my wiring, I noticed these differences:

    • The two wires you mentioned are purple on my setup, not orange.

    • The black wire is already in the slot you suggested moving it to.

    • If I were to do your instructions in reverse and have my 4Runner setup matach yours in your picture, the slot with the black wire is completely empty on my 4Runner's receiving dock; there's no receiving wire at all.

Do you have any advice for a setup with a JBL amplifier? Since my black wire is already in the slot you recommended, what would be the next step to get the steering wheel controls to work?

    Thanks for your help!
