About 90% of vehicles in the USA will have the Panasonic-made original radio in their Toyota Highlander. Take a look at the below graphic to confirm. There is a small number below your tune knob. It will only start with "P" if you have a Pioneer (rare).
You can use your factory radio channels and have CarPlay/Android Auto showing on your screen with the Hamilton Upgrade Kits with one important limitation: Please note that the factory radio channels are sealed channels. This means Siri cannot talk through these channels.
When you are streaming audio via CarPlay (e.g. Spotify, Apple Music, Sirius App, etc.), your music and Siri/Navigation will come out of your vehicle speakers mixed together.
However, while using the sealed factory radio channels, you will only be able to hear radio audio. System audio (Siri, navigation sounds, phone calls) cannot be mixed into the factory radio channels.
Note: You will not be able to use the AUX port for any external media devices liked DACs or MP3 players. The Hamilton Upgrade Kit consumes this audio input for CarPlay/Android Auto.
Playing audio via the factory USB port is not supported while using CarPlay/Android Auto. If you prefer USB, please use wired CarPlay/Android Auto.

We will be adding a new Hamilton USB for wired CarPlay. This system will have wired and wireless CarPlay/Android Auto. We would encourage you to use the Hamilton USB port when using the Hamilton system. You can continue to use your factory USB ports but you may find that the vehicle tries to set you into USB audio mode. It is best not to use USB audio mode with CarPlay. While you are not using CarPlay, you can easily use your OEM USB port.

I have a 2016 Highlander with low miles, it’s a great car except for no CarPlay. The Hamilton has great integration with factory settings. My hibachi’s a similar CarPlay aftermarket in his 2011 Subaru Outback, but it wasn’t a Hamilton, and the integration is more clunky. The only issues I have is occasionally the CarPlay loses Bluetooth connection while I’m driving and will cut out for a few seconds (goes black) but usually in a few seconds it pops back up and continues playing music or giving directions (whatever it was doing before the interruption). I wish I could answers calls easier when listening to music (the microphone is on CarPlay but you need to switch it back to factory mode) but I’m sure I’ll figure out how to swap this faster so I don’t have to answer on my iPhone vs through the car. Installed by Waves to Wheels in Mound, MN, perfect experience there. Loving it all so far, thank you for the great product and helpful customer support.

I bought this product because I got a 2019 Toyota Highlander and I was not having a nice experience because it has no carplay or android auto feature. Toyota is so conservative. Honda Pilot 2019 has this feature. So I conducted an extensive research. I found a couple of products to enable this feature on my OEM entertainment system. I didn't want to replace the OEM system, because I had a bad experience with the aftermarket I purchased on my old vehicle, and since I live in a cold zone which sometimes experiences -40 degrees Celsius, it trips off during extreme weather conditions especially Winter. This product seem to be the best I found as it integrates into the OEM system.
It took 3 hours to install the upgrade kit and I also wanted to keep my XM radio. I didn't want to let go any existing features. The vehicle is equipped with the 360 degrees bird eye view. The upgrade is smooth, besides the fact that the upper screen takes a lot of time to respond, but this could be a thing with the OEM (one of the reviewers also mentioned this). The system reconnects automatically even after moving away from the vehicle.
My only recommendation is to have the flat ribbon cables longer. With the shorter ribbon cables, it took about an hour to get those attached to the screen board, knowing I wanted to keep my XM radio.
Package arrived. I watched the install video and followed exactly. It was very clear and everything went smooth. I will reiterate, keeping the xm module does meant a tight fit pushing the head unit back in. But it fits. Retained all functions in the car. Works great. Was what I was looking for. Very happy with this.
The ribbon cable could be a little longer, it was hard to line up with my fat fingers. It was hard to stuff the harness inside the dash. The factory radio touch screen isn’t very responsive. But works great.
Added this unit to my wifes 2017 highlander. 3 weeks in and no problems! Install was easy until we had to put the unit back in. With the XM module installing it back in was the hardest part. The install video was super helpful!
It has been great. After watching the install video the installation took an hr or so. I’ve installed lots of radios in cars over the years. Straight forward install.
This device truly blew out my expectations. Having a 2014 Highlander, I didn’t expect the interface, feel, and quality of this product would be so great. The factory radio feels like one of a 2020’s car. The touchscreen I would say is more responsive than Toyota’s own interface and the resolution is really good. Really, really recommend to anyone interested. Also, when installing, removing the XM satellite module (who uses that anymore?) makes the installation much, much easier.
It works great. Love the wireless connection. The two area that I thought would be problem areas were connecting the ribbons to the display and getting all the wires back in the dash They were a challenge but with time was able to complete.
Easy to follow video instructions. Only hangup was the tight proximity with the ribbon cables to SiriusXM having big hands. Once connected works flawlessly!
These folks know customer service and don’t rest until it’s done. Really impressive.

So far the Hamilton upgrade has exceeded my expectations. I chose not to use the XM box so I left it out because I don’t ever want to use it anyway. I did modify my factory radio plate so that the ribbon cable was not up against anything sharp, and it went together perfectly. I will say the hardest part is the ribbon cables plugging in, but once you figure out how it goes in there wasn’t too bad. You have to just make sure that the notches in the ribbon cable lineup with the factory locators.
Still learning how to use it but it’s working great and I don’t regret buying it.

Video was great for helping with the installation. I took me about an hour. The only problem was that the touch buttons on the top of the screen did not work. I emailed them and received a response in minutes on how to calibrate the screen. Everything works as advertised.
