Frequently Asked Questions

Does this device have CarPlay and Android Auto?

Yes, the 2009-2013 Toyota 4Runner Hamilton Conversion Kits supports wireless CarPlay and Android Auto built-in. It does not have wired CarPlay/Android Auto.

What is the Hamilton underlying Operating System?

Beneath CarPlay/Android Auto, we have worked to develop a Hamilton operating system. You can give it a data connection either by installing a 4G SIM card (we recommend T-Mobile) or connecting it to your phone's hotspot when CarPlay/Android Auto are not in use.

With the underlying operating system you can download apps directly onto the device that are not available in CarPlay/Android Auto. This includes streaming apps and other functionality (please research and abide by local laws regarding video usage on screen).

Should I be aware of any expected system behavior or design changes with this Conversion Kit?

Yes. Hamilton Conversion Kits replace the factory head unit completely on Toyota vehicles. Because of this, some factory functions are superseded or behave differently. The following notes are provided so you enter installation with accurate expectations:

  1. XM/AM Tuner Replacement
Toyota’s factory XM/AM tuner is bypassed as part of the upgrade.
FM radio continues to function normally through a new Hamilton tuner, and SiriusXM access is available through the SiriusXM app in Apple CarPlay or 4G streaming. Factory XM/AM radio are no longer available.

  2. Microphone Compatibility (2009–2013 Models)
Toyota made multiple microphone harness revisions during these years. Many 2009-2013 factory microphones are supported but not all for the 4Runner. Where the factory mic is not supported, the Hamilton aftermarket microphone included in the kit is used. It provides quality clarity and performance.

  3. USB Ports
Factory USB ports are not utilized in this platform. New Hamilton USB dongles are provided instead. These can be routed to aftermarket USB locations during installation.

  4. Installation Reference
The 2009-2013 models follow the same layout and procedures as the 2014–2019 installation video.
Simply match the harness labeled 2009–2013 during installation. There is not a dedicated 2009-2013 install video. The installations are almost identical.

  5. Maintenance & Vehicle Apps
Toyota maintenance reminders and mileage warnings continue to display in the gauge cluster as normal.
Factory maintenance apps previously accessed through the original screen are no longer used.

  6. Factory Compass Display
If equipped with an on-dash compass (N/S/E/W indicators), these originate from the original head unit and will no longer display after upgrade installation.

These characteristics are normal for OEM-replacement integration systems and ensure compatibility, stability, and digital audio performance. Hamilton strives to make all information as clear as possible to help you make the best decision.
