switching between phones

  • So I love everything about this new 2014-2019 4runner conversion kit except the fact that there seems to be absolutely no way to switch between iphones if you have multiple drivers.  Even if you force disconnect and select a new device, the unit will just stay connected to the previous phone for carplay.  If you close the app and reopen, it still reconnects to the previous phone.  If you shut the car off and start it back up, it reconnects to the previous phone.  It will even sometimes reconnect to one phone for carplay, but clearly show a bluetooth connection to a different phone.  If anyone has any logistical options for using this with more than one driver, please let me know.

  • Any update? Just bought and installed and this would be a major annoyance with switching who's playing music or navigating. The old head unit was relatively quick to switch users.

  • Same, I just installed the Highlander version and am having the same issue since my wife and I both use the vehicle, and often together but swapping drivers.

I suspect it has something to do with how CarPlay initially uses Bluetooth to connect but then switches to WiFi for higher transfer speeds.  So once one phone connects to WiFi, even if you switch to a different phone on Bluetooth it's still connected to the old phone via WiFi for CarPlay.

Seems like the easiest way for now will be flipping on/off Bluetooth or WiFi to get the right phone to connect, but it isn't seamless at all.

Would love to see if Hamilton could roll-out a fix for this!
