CarPlay Overview and Setup

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, the 2009-2013 Toyota 4Runner Hamilton Conversion Kits supports wireless CarPlay and Android Auto built-in. It does not have wired CarPlay/Android Auto.

Beneath CarPlay/Android Auto, we have worked to develop a Hamilton operating system. You can give it a data connection either by installing a 4G SIM card (we recommend T-Mobile) or connecting it to your phone's hotspot when CarPlay/Android Auto are not in use.

With the underlying operating system you can download apps directly onto the device that are not available in CarPlay/Android Auto. This includes streaming apps and other functionality (please research and abide by local laws regarding video usage on screen).

Yes. Hamilton Conversion Kits replace the factory head unit completely on Toyota vehicles. Because of this, some factory functions are superseded or behave differently. The following notes are provided so you enter installation with accurate expectations:

  1. XM/AM Tuner Replacement
Toyota’s factory radio tuner is eliminated as part of the upgrade (as the factory radio is deleted).
FM and AM radios continues o function normally through a new Hamilton tuner, and SiriusXM access is available through the SiriusXM app in Apple CarPlay or 4G streaming. Factory XM radio is no longer available.

  2. Microphone Compatibility (2009–2013 Models)
Toyota made multiple microphone harness revisions during these years. Many 2009-2013 factory microphones are supported but not all for the 4Runner. Where the factory mic is not supported, the Hamilton aftermarket microphone included in the kit is used. It provides quality clarity and performance.

  3. USB Ports
Factory USB ports are not utilized in this platform. New Hamilton USB dongles are provided instead. These can be routed to aftermarket USB locations during installation.

  4. Installation Reference
The 2009-2013 models follow the same layout and procedures as the 2014–2019 installation video.
Simply match the harness labeled 2009–2013 during installation. There is not a dedicated 2009-2013 install video. The installations are almost identical.

  5. Maintenance & Vehicle Apps
Toyota maintenance reminders and mileage warnings continue to display in the gauge cluster as normal.
Factory maintenance apps previously accessed through the original screen are no longer used.

  6. Factory Compass Display
If equipped with an on-dash compass (N/S/E/W indicators), these originate from the original head unit and will no longer display after upgrade installation.

These characteristics are normal for OEM-replacement integration systems and ensure compatibility, stability, and digital audio performance. Hamilton strives to make all information as clear as possible to help you make the best decision.

Perfect fitment, functionality is amazing! It looks like a factory option and the sound is incredible. Also, I can’t say enough good things about the support from the company. Every time I called a real person answered right away and knew exactly how to help. I’m beyond impressed with this unit.

Great product and DIY experience!

I purchased this product for my wife's 2013 4Runner SR5. The Bluetooth had failed on the original factory unit (Toyota-Pioneer) so I was happy to find Hamilton's solution to modernize the head unit with up to date technology when I was doing research online. We are planning to keep the vehicle for a long time so it made sense to purchase this type of product and improve the daily driving experience. My wife and I are very happy with the finished installed product. It makes her daily driving experience much more convenient now to have Android Auto mirror her phone (music, texts, maps, etc) on the larger touchscreen display. The installation was not bad at all and we are both impressed with the finished look of the unit. There are no gaps and it looks like it came from the factory for this vehicle. Here are my top PROS and CONS based upon MY experience with installing this unit.

PROS
*Super attractive product that maintains original elements and functionality from the air vents, hazard lights, and has a clean finished appearance.
*Detailed wiring diagram included
*Install videos available on Hamilton YouTube channel
*Tech support (North Carolina, USA) available via phone (which I did use and it was very helpful!)
*Wires are labeled with little tags to help you figure out what they are for and where they may go
*Fast shipping and very nice packaging. These things you would expect from a premium product and they really delivered.

CONS
*Lots of extra wires included that I did not need for my particular vehicle and radio model (2013 Toyota-Pioneer). Taking the time to ask this up front on the order (if there is any easy way to tell without disassembly) would save confusion upon install, as the installer would have more confidence navigating the large amount of excess harness.
*I had to use some harness that were labeled as 2014+ despite my vehicle being a 2013.
*The trim pieces held by tiny screws over the A/C scroll wheels were hard to get in. It felt like the new molding was not exactly like the old causing the fit to be not as flush. The finished product ended up looking great after a lot of re-positioning. Be careful not to strip out the screws.

Bottom line for me, this is a GREAT product! There are just a few small steps left to make this an EXCEPTIONAL product.

Toyota 4Runner Hamilton CarPlay® Conversion Kit Review

Vehicle: 2011 Toyota 4Runner (2009-2013 compatible)

Rating: ★★★★½ (4.5/5)

The Bottom Line Up Front

If you're looking to breathe new life into a beloved 4Runner without trading it in, the Hamilton conversion kit is an excellent investment that delivers modern tech to a proven platform.

Why I Upgraded

My 2011 4Runner has been absolutely bulletproof mechanically, but the original infotainment system had degraded to the point of barely functioning. The screen was dim, the controls were unresponsive, and it felt increasingly dated compared to modern vehicles. I wasn't ready to give up on a vehicle that still had plenty of life left, so I started researching retrofit options.

The Transformation

Screen & Interface: The upgrade is dramatic. The new screen size and crisp Apple CarPlay interface represent a generational leap from the original system. What was once a frustrating interaction with a failing screen is now seamless, responsive, and frankly enjoyable to use. Navigation, music, calls—everything that should "just work" in 2024 now does.

Value Proposition: Combined with suspension upgrades I've made, this conversion has effectively bought me another 5+ years of uncompromised performance from my 4Runner. When you consider the cost of a new vehicle versus keeping a mechanically sound one with modern tech, the math makes sense.

Installation Experience

The Good: The kit itself is well-designed and clearly engineered specifically for the 4Runner platform. Hamilton has clearly put thought into making this work properly.
Room for Improvement: Installation instructions could be more robust for older model years. While Hamilton does provide a video tutorial, having more detailed, model-specific guidance upfront would have saved some trial and error. For those of us working on 2009-2013 models specifically, enhanced documentation would be valuable.

Microphone Challenge: I ran into some complications getting the microphone working correctly, which required several rounds of troubleshooting with Hamilton's technical support.

Where Hamilton Really Shines: Customer Service

Here's what sets Hamilton apart: their support team was genuinely committed to solving my microphone issue from day one. No runaround, no "that's not covered," no ghosting—just persistent, knowledgeable help until everything worked perfectly.
In today's market, finding this level of technical support for what is essentially a bespoke, specialized product is extraordinarily rare. Many companies would have pointed me to a forum or sent a generic FAQ. Hamilton's technicians stayed with the problem, worked through solutions with me, and didn't stop until it was right.
This matters enormously. A product like this—retrofitting modern tech into a 13-year-old vehicle—is inherently complex. You need a company that stands behind their work. Hamilton does.

Who Should Buy This?

Ideal for:

4Runner owners who love their vehicles but hate outdated tech
Anyone planning to keep their 4Runner for several more years
Drivers who value CarPlay/Android Auto functionality
People willing to invest in quality retrofits over trading in

Recommendations for Hamilton

Enhanced video tutorials specifically for 2009-2013 model years—the small differences matter during installation

Keep doing exactly what you're doing with customer service—it's your competitive advantage

Final Thoughts

This conversion kit transformed my 4Runner's interior from "frustratingly outdated" to "completely modern" in terms of the daily-use technology. The screen upgrade alone justifies the investment, and having full CarPlay functionality makes every drive more pleasant.

More importantly, Hamilton's commitment to customer satisfaction gave me confidence in the product. When you're modifying a vehicle you plan to keep long-term, knowing the company will support you matters as much as the hardware itself.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely. Both the product and the company earn my endorsement.

Would I buy it again? Without hesitation.

Jaw-dropping!

Bought this as my original non-JBL head unit wouldn’t hold a Bluetooth connection any longer. I wish I had bought this years ago! Delivered fast - installed in less than an hour with practically zero experience (just watch the video) and the result was eye watering performance! Sounds amazing and having CarPlay has been a huge upgrade for my wife. This upgrade has breathed new life into my 4Runner and it’s a joy to use. I truly cannot say enough good about this system or company! Buy and install with confidence!

I am 100 percent satisfied, with the color the options that it offers, the ease in operation. Had it installed at a local audio shop I would highly recommend your company to anyone looking to upgrade their audio equipment.

The head unit looks great and my installer said that it was the nicest after market unit that he had ever installed in a 4 Runner. The reason for the 4 stars is that the product support is being outsourced and I am not able to understand the person on the other line. If you purchase this unit be prepared to diagnose any issues on your own.

Great product and even better customer service!

Ordered this head unit for my 2010 4Runner Limited. It arrived quickly. However, after installing it, the audio, steering wheel controls, and backup camera didn’t work. I reached out to Hamilton and spoke to one of their technicians who had me take a picture of the old factory head unit. Turns out I have a rare one. No trouble for these guys. I live within driving distance of Hamilton so they sent their head engineer out to do some testing. He spent about 4 hours working in my vehicle to reprogram the new unit and now everything works perfectly. I seriously can’t recommend these guys enough.
